What they say about us:

John, Multi Sharpening Mobile Service Says:

My first contact with Flamin' Sharp was an accidental pop-up on a Business For Sale page on the computer. What caught my eye were these 3 white vehicles with some flashy sign-writing and insignias all over them. They intrigued me enough to start reading what was printed below.

The first paragraph summed up my situation exactly to a tee which was over 40, unemployed, experienced in many different facets of working life, ready willing and able to start work immediately, but no-one would hire me due to my age. I decided to read the rest of the story. I was a bit disbelieving at some of Bob's claims, mainly that you could earn $140/hour while grinding. I spoke at length to my wife about this and we decided to call young Robert and dig a bit deeper.

My initial conversation with Bob was reasonably short, mainly just asked what sort of sharpening he did etc etc. After about 4 days we decided the only way to get a really good idea of what goes on was to go to Adelaide and see for myself. I did just that, flew to Adelaide Melbourne Cup day 2012 with the worst pilot I've ever been on a plane with. I nicknamed him Captain Kangaroo, as he hit the ground 3-4 times before deciding that this was the right airport after all. Bob collected me from the airport, took me back to my accommodation and we got settled in.

Next day Bob collected me and we went to work. I distinctly remember Bob’s first job with me which was a curtain/blinds business in Adelaide. I stood and watched as Bob sharpened and I kept count. He sharpened about $175 worth of equipment in 45 minutes, docket filled out and job finished. I was texting all this back home as it happened.

I had an enjoyable 4 days with Bob at the time and we agreed to keep in contact after that. My wife and I decided after a week or so that this was probably going to be alright as a business venture and we notified Bob that we would like to proceed into the business.

Training with Bob started last week of November. My vehicle went to Stallion Engineering to have the service body fitted and repainted. The training lasted nearly 4 weeks, bearing in mind that I had absolutely no idea how to sharpen anything when I started and I have no trade background at all. Bob explained everything to me as we went along. Whenever I got the glazed-over look he would stop and retrace what we'd been through, until I had a fairly good understanding of what we were doing. As we progressed through each segment of the training manual, Bob would sign me off after I agreed that I knew what we had just done. There was no impatience on his part at anytime with trying to get me signed off quicker. Although there were times when I was hoping he would and he has some pranks and old jokes that I didn't know about at the time.

In between my training I spent some time helping with the fitting out of my service body and rotary table which was very beneficial as I got to see how everything went together which was good for later maintenance.

I headed home the week before Christmas 2012 and started my life as a sharpener.

Bob and Annette came to visit me in February 2013 for a couple of weeks. Bob wanted to see how I was getting on and observe my work practices. Initially I didn't think it was necessary as I'd only been going for a month, but as it turned out it was highly beneficial. As with all people, we have our quirks and unconscious way of doing things slightly differently without really knowing we're doing it. Bob picked up quite a few things that I was doing slightly incorrectly, in some cases more than slightly. All in all, the extra ‘onsite training’ was extremely worthwhile.

Over the last 3 odd years Bob and I speak quite often. Sometimes it's just to say g'day and see how things are going and sometimes I'll have a query about a problem. Bob's never been too busy to stop and chat or help out. I've also spoken to Dan and Carlo, as well as texts and Facebook conversations with questions or   ideas. I've also spoken to Rob, Phil and Darren when they've had queries about difficulties they're having or better equipment we could use. I would say that as a group of professional sharpeners we are extremely helpful to each other.

As a business, I've found the last 3 years very enjoyable. I've met some great people, and a few not so great. Being that I live in a country city, I find that I have to travel quite a bit to sustain the business, but I enjoy travelling so this isn't a real issue for me.

I've been to a lot of places that I may never have travelled to if I wasn't doing this. I'd love to do this in a big city as I reckon I could make a real killing as the "Mirror Cut" concept clearly outclasses any other sort of knife sharpening business.

With the addition of the "Twice as Sharp" scissor sharpening machine we are streets ahead of all our opposition, (I regularly repair blunt/poorly sharpened dressmaking scissors all across Central Queensland and even had scissors 'sharpened' in Brisbane come to me for re-sharpening).

I've found the equipment that came with the business to be very reliable, only replaced 1 piece since I started and that was due to me finding a slightly better model.

So in summing up my experience in joining the Flamin’ Sharp group, I found them to be Honest, Professional in all aspects of the business with Excellent training and follow up. What more could you ask for in setting up a new business from scratch.

If anyone has any queries, feel free to give me a buzz.
